Smile Aspect Ratios!

I was reading Tom's post this morning on "How to create screencasts you can be proud of". I love the note on Select the right aspect ratio. I am always writing this stuff down somwhere! But I am always losing them too!
Select the right aspect ratio. You can capture any size screen. However. Screenr does come with some default settings that work well in your rapid elearning courses. For example, 720540 is the aspect ratio for a PowerPoint slide. 980560 is perfect for videos in the no sidebar view mode in Articulate Presenter.
Wouldn't it be sweet to have a chart somewhere we can pull up to list all of these aspect ratio clues!?! No matter where you are, creating and Engage interaction, applying graphics in a Quizmaker quiz, or whatever, there is always a recommended best for the graphics or video aspect ratio for objects if you want it to just display or if you want to be able to zoom with a click.

I am starting a new list and I hope I don't lose it. It is going to have this:

PowerPoint slide............................................. ......................720540
Videos in the no sidebar view mode in Articulate .................... 980560

Thanks Tom!

Thank you, Patrick, for posting this! You're right, it's helpful to have all the max dimensions in one place, and we'll look into creating something you can download. Great suggestion!

For now, I'll post some more dimensions here in case it'll help anyone:

Quiz slides: 686wx424h (or, if you're inserting a movie w/a control playbar, I'd recommend a size of 690hx396w)

Also here's a list of the sizes for Engage interactions, which appeared in this blog post by Dave Moxon:

Process: If you have no text in the step then the maximum size is: 620 px width x 310 px height.

Labeled Graphic: 690 px width x 470 px height.

Tabs
With the tabs at a minimum size of 10%, then the maximum image size is 553 px width x 380 px height.
With the tabs at the regular size of 30%, then the maximum image size is 425 px width x 380 px height.

Circle Diagram
Using a maximum-size image in this interaction type is not perhaps the best idea. Officially, it is 250 px width by 330 px height. In practice, 310 px height is better.

Timeline
620 px width x 310 px height.

Media Tour
688 px width x 468 px height (without captions or video player).

FAQ
617 px width x 310 px height (with or without the optional search fields).

Pyramid Diagram
Officially a maximum size of 250 px width x 320 px height, but in practice, a height of 305 px maximum is better.

Guided Image
This interaction is slightly different from the others in that it automatically resizes the image and you can alter the amount of space the image takes. The maximum amount is 85%. With the standard setting at 75%, then the ideal image size to avoid resizing is 434 px width x 295 px height. With the increased setting of 85%, I estimate an ideal image size of approximately 490 px width x 335 px height.

Glossary
493 px width x 330 px height (with glossary items set to a minimum width).

Here's another I just came across in a different thread:

Powered By Articulate logo: You can replace this with your own logo of up to 42 pixels high. (Learn how here.) The logo can be as wide as you like but will eventually overlap the player controls. If you're using the volume control button in your template, don't go wider than 220 pixels.

Do you know off-hand what the correct aspect ratio would be for importing a video with the Captivate playbar included (on the bottom) in the no sidebar view mode in Articulate?
The 980560 aspect cut off the top and bottom.
I haven't tried this yet, so I'm not sure, but will the Articulate playbar controls (seek) work on an imported .swf video? (Example: if I import a Captivate video without the Captivate playbar.)
Thank you!

Hi Pink Lady,

The maximum allowable size for an inserted Flash movie in Presenter 09 is 720 pixels by 540 pixels, so you should ensure that your inserted Flash movie is 720540 or smaller.

Jeanette, I think that your Quiz slides aspect ratio amounts might be incorrect in regard to the width and heights being switched. I haven't actually tried it yet, but I got confused about the new amounts listed if you use a video with playbar.
Thank you for posting all of the ratios!

Doh! Thanks, Pink Lady - you're right & I just edited the w/h. Appreciate you mentioning that! Are you all set, then with the sizes for videos w/playbar? The actual video itself is just a smidge smaller in height to allow a little space for the height of the playbar.

Also, re: your earlier question about the Captivate swf... not sure what height the Captivate playbar is; but that would definitely contribute to overall height, so you'd need to subtract that from the 560px you have to work with when the video's displayed in no-sidebar view. As Brian mentioned, if your learners will view the video in Standard view, your real estate goes down to 720x540.

And yes, re: your other question... if you add a swf to a slide in Presenter, you can choose whether it plays in sync with the slide itself (i.e., then the Presenter controls can be used to seek/play/pause the video) or whether you want it to play independently. Here's a little more info about adding the swf:
Add a Movie in Presenter Articulate Presenter 09 Knowledge Base

Thanks Brian and Jeanette! I always wondered about that option of it playing in sync with slide. Guess I just didn't understand what it meant.
